50 years on from my first Palace FA Cup tie. Palace v Southampton, 1973. We beat Southampton at home in Div 1 on Boxing Day 1972 (3-0) and then in the cup in January (2-0). The Don scored in at least one of the games, possibly in both. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The 2-0 cup win was my first ever Palace game. I've got a feeling Iain Phillip scored one of the goals. I think we beat Chelsea 2-0 in next home game (Jim cannon's debut - scored and booked). I was hooked. Needless to say, we got relegated that season and the next! I guess when I go to the cup game, my first and last Palace games will be Southampton in the cup.

Apropos the Southampton games in 1972 and 1973 I do have a feeling that Don Rogers scored in both encounters.

What is the thinking behind the 12.30 kick off? There is a rail strike planned for that Saturday currently which doesn’t help?

Just seen that N'castle & Soton hhome ties in the league cup on 21st Dec have been moved due to a strike by ambulance staff . . . . [Link] Edited by eagleman13 (12 Dec 2022 7.21pm)
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Hopefully 'latest' rather than 'last' though

The Chelsea game was later - April I think - and yes it was 2-0 and Cannon scored on his debut. Allison was in attendance for the first time too, although sat in the stand. I would go to the 3rd Round but it is another weekend of rail strikes. How often do I get a trouble free trip on the train to Palace? Strikes, engineering works, shortage of staff, someone "on the line", signal failures, a broken down train ahead ... hardly ever. I almost feel like giving up my season ticket.
