Although PV obviously sees something in him (maybe some of it has been through lack of choice) but he has been bringing him on as sub for some time now & whilst the start on Saturday didnt give any confidence to the faithful (who had fully expected Decoure to return) he didnt let us down -

We have 3 games in just a few days coming up, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Decoure start the 2 league matches but Luca to come on with 15 minutes to go ( or some combination of Luca & Will Hughes) & for Luca to start & play the whole the cup game-

Its a squad game these days & a manager has to make use of all of his resources in line with the circumstances he finds himself -

I would also expect to see Jairo involved in the Newcastle game.

Agreed. Newcastle away will be very difficult (I expect us to lose) and I suspect PV will want to keep his best options for the two PL games so as to give us the best chance of going into the WC break ("World Cup" or "water closet" - take your pick) on a positive note. I'm expecting the game at Newcastle to comprise a starting XI something like this (depending on injuries/fitness).

Johnstone

Clyne/Rodney Tomkins Guehi Riedewald

Milivojevic Phillips Hughes

Ebiowei Mateta Gordon

I suspect there will be several 1st team players who simply won't make the journey, so as to ensure they're fresh for the Forest game (we're playing Sunday - Wednesday - Saturday, so 3 games in 7 days).

Yep, hopefully we play a 2nd string at the toon.

They are flying high and will want to keep that winning feeling going. We need to be 100% ready for forest.

And whilst not a great one, we do have a squad so we need to use it.

He is a decent player and gets unfairly ridiculed. A view from an unbiased report.

If the team is anything like that, I'll eat my palace bobble hat.

PV will want to do well In the cups, and I see only a couple of changes....

Absolutely agree. Great read. If we can get our skipper anywhere near back to his best...he's a quality CM.

I thought he had an excellent game and would like to see him alongside Doucoure instead of Schlupp against Westham.

He did have a good game v saints. If he could cut out the unnecessary fouls and also put a stop to his assumption that he should take every free kick, then he would be a lot more useful to us.

I agree Lanzo. Doucoure could then play a more Jimmy Mac role further forward. A midfield of a renewed Luka, Doucoure and Eze could work well. Luka, though has to show that Soton wasn't a flash-in-the-pan and if he can then whilst we will still need another quality midfielder, we may not have to make a January panic buy. It's a big 'if' though.

Agreed. The job for Luka now is to push on and show it wasn't a one off - exactly like you said. Unfortunately, my gut tells me PV will reinstate Schlupp, draining Luka of all the newfound confidence and we're back to square one.

I can't stress enough how much confidence and rhythm impacts a players performances. I've experienced the ups and downs myself way too often.

I would have no problem Luka playing alongside Doucoure who could push forward a bit more and get a few shots off like he did against Wolves

In possession, Luka's issue is that he's not got the ability to play quickly in tight spaces. Give him space and time and sure, he can pick a pass, but any professional can. Fire it into him and his poor touch and inability to give a first time pass leaves him often caught in possession and therefore short of the required standard in the PL. Doucoure/McArthur are miles better at that attribute. He looked comfortable in that first half because he wasn't under any pressure in possession.

Someone like a Declan Rice on Saturday could really expose him (as he did in that absolute shocker of a first half at Selhurst last season).

Defensively, he's not quick enough to play that holding role by himself. If we get countered, he'll take the yellow card but that only works once.

We need to buy a holding midfielder - single biggest issue in our team. Perhaps someone like Sander Berge at Sheffield United.
