Of the strikers I've seen mentioned here, Ings (IF he's available) is the only one who comes close to having any serious goalscoring pedigree in the PL. I know many favour these shopping lists of goalscorers from various European leagues such as the one in the first post on this thread but I presume those who provide such lists have seen little more of the players suggested than the odd YouTube clip so it eludes my why such suggestions should be taken seriously. The truth is, potential signings fall into two categories. First, those you can be reasonably confident might deliver what you're looking for on the basis that they've done so in the past (as I said, Ings is one of these). And those who are little more than risks. Edouard was a risk. So was Mateta. So was Dwight Gayle (at the time). And so would any other striker from outside the PL be. None of those three has really proved worth the risk taken in signing them. Of course, sometimes those risks do pay off, but when they do, it's more often at positions other than striker. The Jamie Vardy's of the world are the exception to the rule; not the rule itself. We haven't seen that kind of signing pay off for ten years or so now, despite trying to do so repeatedly. Andrew Johnson, and maybe Glenn Murray, are the last two who come to mind. The best way to find a great striker is to develop one yourself because a proven one on the transfer market costs millions, and even a semi-proven one comes with an enormous risk of failure yet still costs a small fortune. This reality may be why Arsenal have (sensibly) been so patient with Eddie Nketiah, and so unwilling to let him go. Strikers who deliver are rare; keep with your own until they've proven beyond all doubt that won't. Since we know (in my view) that none of Edouard, Ayew, or Mateta can deliver what we're looking for - regular goals in the PL, I'm not sure why don't give Gordon or Plange (yes, I know he's presently in Belgium) a run. What do we have to lose? I'd certainly do that before I spunked another few million on someone who's unproven and as likely, if we learn anything from history, to fail as he is to succeed. Not many lottery tickets win the jackpot. So for me, if we can get Ings or equivalent, I'm in but if we can't, I'd try to promote from within before we compromised elsewhere.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |
