You really believe we work to better the country. We work because we need money. If you work because you need something to do then fair play but to get there you would have originally worked for money. Public sector is easy, lots of sick and virtually no chance of the sack and a good pension. People cannot moan about pay when they know that better money is out there. Public sector are just about to get a decent pay rise. I got 2% and probably will again if I’m lucky but I need to work in the private sector as the money is what I need. State workers generate no profit for hmg. Not their fault but it is a fact.

Of course I work.for money. I need to live like anyone else. I earn a decent (some would say very good) wage. But I work bloody hard for it. But all I am saying is I have chosen in return for a decent pension and work life balance to earn less than I could in the private sector. Mind you I doubt I would have been beaten up, spat at and suffered the other various levels of abuse I have because of my work had I worked in the private sector.

Maybe it's as I am getting older, a good pension means a lot more to me now than it did in my youth. I don't expect a medal (got one already,) praise or pity it's a choice I made.

Yes terms and conditions are better than a lot of private sector employers but maybe that is as a result of the public sector being one of the last bastions of unionised employment.

As for pay rises as I have said the issue is perhaps better expressed by the fact that public servants have in recent years when you look at inflation had pay cuts in real terms. Mind you so have many others so all I will say is that I think everyone should get a raise in their pay at least in line with inflation year on year or maybe we all get the we % pay rise as MP's

The state are guaranteed a pay rise. The old below the rate of inflation is a white elephant to bash hmg. I went 3 years without a rise in the private sector. Difficult to strike when work is a bit scarce but state workers lose the days pay (apparently) private sector lose their job.

5.1% up to 8.3% rises.
Tough old life working for the state. Don’t forget pension contributions go up as well so the lowest rise is probably 8%.
Hmg running scared of bad press and unions.

"Before taking account of inflation, average total pay growth for March to May 2022 was 7.2% in the private sector and 1.5% in the public sector."

That was my main take away!

Inflation is 9-10 %, so anything below that is a pay cut!

Yes for everyone what’s your point. Do you want your shopping to go up 10% so workers get that rise. Not that it would affect someone of your affluence but all the same

Simple because some people do still believe in the importance of a strong public sector and see a value in working there. As well as a public service ethos I stayed because I saw it as giving me a better work life balance, better job security and a decent pension.

I was able to work flexibly and see my kids grow up with me as, a part of that. I know many former colleagues who left public service for the money and the bonuses who now say that loss of work life balance is the one thing they missed. To me it was priceless.

All very worthy, I'm sure, but I was merely posing a stupid rhetorical question to mirror your own stupid rhetorical question.

Apologies

Clearly being a public sector wage slave in thrall to the union barons I was clearly not bright enough to spot that 😁
