One of the new changes this coming season is that Premier League 2 will now be an U21 competition so U23 will disappear. Rules regarding overage players have been relaxed a little. See the below entry from the club's website

Maybe it’s a way to make clubs release a few more players. If at 23 you aren’t even a consideration for the bench then maybe lower league or another club is where you should be. Sadly some won’t get that far but at least they will have some support to move on in life which I believe is mandatory for clubs now. Some players may flourish much later ie Ian wright so best fly the nest and see where your at.

Thanks for this doombear.Doesn't seem like much of a change in reality, as 6 of the u21 XI can be over age.

I'm always baffled by how many fully grown adults are employed to play reserve team football only. Youth sides used to be full of skinny, spotty kids waiting to fill out a bit. Our u23s have looked like a bunch of grizzled veterans at times over the last few years, with bearded, tattooed, fifteen stone and six foot two inch 'development prospects'.

As I've said before on other threads, most players in every youth age group are kept around simply so that the one or two that might make it have someone to play matches with. I understand that, as I'm sure do the players themselves. What I don't understand is employing a group of 22 and 23 year old men seemingly for the purposes of fulfilling reserve league fixtures.
