Incidents, however minor, can cause fans to think twice about attending games. Also, if it becomes a regular occurrence an unwanted reputation might be gained. That can encourage more of a certain type of people who would want to live up to that reputation. I tend to agree that this topic is being overblown. Whenever you get a load of blokes of a certain ilk in the same space, no doubt with alcohol or drugs having been used, you will at some point get some aggro. I'm sorry if an innocent person got injured, but this incident is far from the beginning of the end.

Not really, hardly any trouble from our fans, trouble per 1000, we are probably among the best behaved in the country. Last season out of all London clubs only Barnet, Dagenham, Leyton orient, Sutton and Bromley had less arrests than us and they have a 10th of our fan base. That's good. Can you provide a link to the data? What I say comes from two ardent Palace fans, both in their 50s, who go all over the world to watch Palace (all home and away including all pre season). They say there are frequently nasty incidents between Palace fans at away games, and that there seems to be a bit of jockeying to be the dominant group. They say it sours things. For various reasons I haven't been to an away game for a long time but happen to be going to Villa with my son. So I'm more interested than normal.

South London has never been for the faint hearted. That said, I do feel that the club should have, and I'm sure does have, a no yobbo policy. What happens outside the stadium is harder to control. But what happened in the 70s destroyed the game and really hurt Palace. And today we live in a world with more sensitivity to such things (whether we like it or not), and far more diverse entertainment alternatives. One major outbreak of trouble at a prem ground would be incredibly destructive to the "brand".
