I've been watching the re-run of Rumpole on Talking Pictures TV. Wonderful. God forbid anyone should ever attempt to do a remake - Leo McKern made that role his and it would be unimaginable anyone attempting to fill his shoes. Although past experience tells us that this wouldn't necessarily stop some production company from trying to do so.

Yup this story keeps surfacing and so far it has not been made, the people who own the rights are spinning trying to get TV companies interested. For those who don't know Rumpole is a scruffy fat old white man who has never had a good career as a barrister because he upsets the judges and always fights for the defendant. In his on way he is a rebel who loves to quote poetry and has a wife who is bitterly disappointed in him "She who must be obeyed". He was played brilliantly by Leo McKern and John Mortimer crafted the books around his performance. I can't see another male actor doing justice to the role let alone a woman. The show was perfect just leave it alone. If they want to do another show about a has been woman fine but that is not Rumpole.

Horrible person in real life, very arrogant with a 'do you know who I am' attitude. He lived in Barnes and was always phoning to complain of petty things and demanding his mail was delivered at a certain time. Locals couldn't abide him and the posties hated him, Brian Rix was another one who lived there and was the same. Amazing how these comedians have a nasty alter ego. Still R.I.P all the same, I used to love 'The Irish R.M.'
