The trams were going to be named after Clement Freud.

That is a blast from the past, he was a grandson of Sigmund and found fame on tv ads with a similarly lugubrious dog.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

It didn't all end well if you look it up. I remember too when he was a real Liberal hero. Not any more.

I never look these things up partly because I'm too lazy but more because when it comes to Palace past, I simply prefer to rely on my memory rather than ameliorate the images with cold facts. I remember it was late in the season, I remember the header, and that's good enough for me. I stand corrected.

Probably best just to go over the facts when your telling others they need a history lesson.

Ask 5 people to recall a story by memory and they'd probably give you a different account.

Essentially the main difference with the current period and previous periods is we dont need to sell our best players, when big clubs come sniffing around. Once we survived 2 seasons in the Premier this time around, we stood a good chance to get established. The TV money has meant financial stability, if managed correctly, so we have no need to sell, but can choose if we want to sell or not. So we can keep Zaha and pay him a huge salary, in the past we couldnt and couldnt hold onto Sansom, Hilaire, Wright, Martyn, Thomas, Moses, Salako etc.

I've made much the same argument elsewhere.

Truth is though that until very recently we've only had one saleable asset* and no one significant was in for him at Markey value! Should some giant come sniffing around then we'd find it very hard to hold on.

It's a new era for the club and that means that with young talent we'll quite possibly be a target as we were back then. Agreed there won't be a financial imperative to sell but the likely upshot may well be similar

* slightly forget how the Bolassie transfer played out.
