He ended up playing back up front for Gillingham and scored s*** loads of goals

Phil Barber gets my vote. Sometimes looked very good, sometimes pretty crap, and he wasn't quite good enough for the top division, but he contributed enormously in the first few years of Steve Coppell's Palace, and no-one could ever fault him for effort. Probably too recent for Nostalgia and too obvious to be "lesser mentioned", but what a cracking player Jimmy Mac has been over the past few years, and totally unrecognised by fans of other teams.

His absence was the single biggest reason we never got going vs. Southampton in the '76 FA Cup Semi Final. Rachid - he is mentioned (at least by everyone who was lucky enough to see him) but not by many who didn't. An absolute one-off. When he got the ball, you had absolutely no idea what he'd do next but it was always outrageous. Some of the time, it was outrageously awful but some of the time he did things it would never even occur to other players to try. And when they came off...unforgettable. From memory, there was a reason for that, which involved Mr Madden spraying rather more than the ball around, in a direction which rather upset Mr Coppell.

The late, lamented Darren Pitcher. Not the most skilful but at times when you needed a thug in the midfield, he was your boy. Also Claude Davis, for whom the word 'agricultural' was invented.
