No one has mentioned French Connection - they were both wonderful and the interplay between Hackman and Fernandinho Rey as good as anything in Godfather - plus the added advantage that they didn' try to make a third episode.

Also Popeye driving after the train was memorable. Another one I like is Prince of the City, although police based rather than being a gangster film, it’s very good and based on a true story though spoiled by a lead performance which is a bit jarring.
