Hughes is a good player, better than Luka and Kouyate in my opinion, But Schlupp is a left sided player, so 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 is definitely the best with what we have
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

The second half performance by Schlupp was more down to him being switched to the left. Vieria then took Hughes off and put Schlupp back in the middle?

Agree with a lot of this, the balance is off and it isn't helping Gallagher or Hughes, with Hughes in particular having to play deeper. I think the selection is more a reflection of how Luka is thought of that a genuine idea that this 3 works - that West Ham performance perhaps finally being the straw that broke the camel's back. Looking forward to having Kouyate back. I still think the Hughes/Gallagher/Schlupp combo is better than any with Luka in it. Hughes has been great value. £6m for a 26 year old midfielder who looks comfortable in a mid-table side? No complaints, especially as he seems to have a bit of bite about him which we're short of. I don't think he or we started well against Liverpool but to give them credit, their one touch stuff to beat our press in that first 10 minutes was sublime. I don't think anyone outside the top 6 would have lived with it. Spot on, particularly re Luka. I get the impression Vieira knows the balance is a little off with the current 3 but it’s the best option we’ve got for now. Luka shouldn’t be anywhere near a Premier League match these days and it seems like PV has worked that out as well.

Playing Schlup alongside Hughes and Gallagher doesn’t help those two. We are missing Kouyate and/or Macca to play in that middle 3. I would have gone for Luka especially against Liverpool as the 3rd in the middle. The balance with Schlup in the 3 doesn’t work which is why Hughes and Gallagher haven’t been as good. Hughes seems to tire after 70 minutes and gets replaced nearly every match. Not sure if it is tiredness or Vieria changing it up. But anyway, I think Hughes has been a great buy for us and with returning players (Afcon/injury) will get better :-) Good point. I think Jeff S has proved over the last few games he can't play central mid (other than the odd great moment). Assuming Conor plays in the advanced role that then puts pressure on Hughes to be the defensive midfielder and the one to collect the ball from the defence. He is ok at this, but not ideal. Against Liverpool i would have tried Luka next to Hughes too.
