Bump. Pack it in. Particularly if it's playing to the opposition's strengths as it did today.

Shocking tactics but we still ultimately had the chances to win.

What's the alternative? Pump it long to Van Dijk to control, give to Henderson and repeat?

Exactly this. Zero point.

They press so high up (TAA was pressing onto Mitchell) that if we can evade the press we can really go at them, particularly in the wide areas. Robertson rarely had any help against Olise.

The players are showing bravery, and trust in their ability. I wish some of the fans could show a little more bravery too

We are not very good at it. Now.

Saw how Chelsea did it in the next game and they converted defence to attack in seconds.

Meanwhile, we almost got pressed back into our own goal or else surrendered possession.

I am really hoping they keep practicing as, if we can reach the qualities of Chelsea (why not?), we will unleash our attack; and they are pretty good.

I shouted out yesterday in frustration at Guehi and Anderson titting about with it up the Whitehorse, what happened? We kept hold of possession and went on to score
So it’s only taken us till the end of January to get it right

Agreed. Playing out from the back is how PV wants us to play and how the club want to play. It takes time to make the transition successfully from Royball (no disrespect to our previous manager who did the job required of him) to the more expansive style we fans have been enjoying this season. Look how long it has taken Brighton to get Potterball up and running! If they had a decent striker they'd be challenging the top 6.

Finally, we are currently making the transition with some players for whom the new style of play doesn't come easy. Assuming we survive this season (and we should) and PV remains, the summer 2022 window should enable us to bring in 2 or 3 more players who are comfortable playing this style.

About £500m of investment, mainly.

We have to take the good with the bad with this stuff; we don't get goals like we got against Brighton without a few failed attempts on the way.

Given the number of chances we created yesterday against one of the best defences in the league, I find it hard to criticise the approach..

In the first half of most matches the wide players start very narrow, which changes in the second half, its much easier to pass out if the wide players are on their lines when we have possession, much more space

We are allowed to challenge and be aggressive on the second ball. Mateta and Benteke are both tall.

I think we've become too predictable. Nothing wrong with playing out but it needs to mixed up a bit.

If you look at the last four games we've been behind at the break in three of them having spent most of the first half unsuccessfully trying to play through the opposition press. Two of those games have effectively been lost at that point.

The one where we weren't behind against Brighton we'd barely left our half. They'd missed a pen and had a goal chalked off.

Our form over the last eleven games isn't great and IMO we've become too predictable for the opposition. Ward in particular has looked really exposed.

good post. Man U are also particularly poor at playing out from the back and Arsenal aren't much better. I noticed a Liverpool player effectively marked our keeper at times so it was clearly a plan. I have no issue with playing out from the back but there is a time and place. Also we need the midfield to provide an out ball. With Jeff and Conor being 2 of the 3 that was never going to happen. The teams who play this best usually have 2 defensive mids

I think it is the inflexible approach that is most frustrating and there are times when it is clearly dangerous but they still do it.
On the other extreme there was an occasion before their second goal on Sunday when Olise was on half way with nobody within 20 meters of him. Guita looked up, and must have seen it. If knocked long I would back Olise’s speed against most in that situation but he rolled it short instead. A lot of people around me were saying put it up, but no.

I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals.

It’s too slow. Both keepers seem to wait until the other team are set and in position .then roll it to Anderson.
The best teams at it are Liverpool and City. If something is on, their keepers throw/ kick it long or to advancing full backs.
Their keepers are slightly more accurate than ours though.
