The very fact that the idea of Andersen playing in midfield is a discussion point perhaps shows how badly he's defended. I really can't think of a game where his defending has stood out as impressive, and he has often been poor in that respect. Guehi hasn't been a lot better. Neither of them can deal with a high ball into the box, and with Guaita being the type of keeper who mostly stays on his line, we are very vulnerable to crosses and at set plays. Teams are surely starting to work that out now.

None of this means the players should be dropped. As others have said, we went out and paid good money for footballing centre-halves to fit our new system, and the whole set up is now built around them.

When Tompkins (who is a much better defender under a high ball) plays, the team looks worse in every respect as he is not as comfortable in possession, so we no longer use the ball as well and end up with more defending to do anyway. Plus he struggles to play in the high defensive line we now use.

The hope is that Andersen, Geuhi and Guaita all get better at the rudimentary basics of dealing with a ball into the box.

Rather than play in Midfield i was wondering in time if we might at times play 3 central defenders with 2 wing backs. Problem currently is we don't have any right sided wingback though i think both Mitchell and Schlupp could play the role on the left.
What i like is Tomkins could play the deeper role and them both Guehi and Anderson will have more license to push on with the ball. Guehi has at times looked to really take on the forwards but this has been risky with only having Anderson behind him and he tends to off load it quickly at the moment.

V measured and sensible post. Couldn't agree more.

We have invested in a new style of play. Not as defensively stable but also with less defending to do. We need to trust the process and take assurance in the fact that the CBs (and TM and NF) are young enough to lean, and will hopefully get better and better.

This is Marc Guehi's first season in the PL and at 6ft he is not that tall for a central-defender but I have seen him more imposing in the air than he has been at our club.He is young and inexperienced and will get better.

I was not impressed with Andersen at Fulham and whilst we all recognise his qualities on the ball, his defensive frailties are there for all to see.

I think it's testament to Guehi that his age is so often overlooked - he's a year younger than Mitchell.

This is very true, I had not even realised that! We have a diamond here , we should enjoy him while we can, mainly because I believe he is destined for great things, would be nice if that was with Palace

The post ultimately comes from the key point which is that we are badly lacking a good DM.

It'll be interesting to see how we play once McArthur is back and Eze is fully up and running. Would we be brave enough to play McArthur, Hughes and Gallagher and just let them all be busy, or would we play Hughes deeper, or does only one of Hughes and JMC play?

Fortunately, I think this is one of actually quite few areas where we very clearly need big improvement in the summer so we can focus funds here. You'd likely add a RB to the list but with Eze still to fully return, we don't need to be chucking really big money on the attack and we'll have our annual Chelsea loanee to add in somewhere.

Perhaps we pick up Billy Gilmour now he's had a full season, same way we took Gallagher off WBA?

3-4-1-2. This is the system Fabio Capello used for AS Roma's 2000 winning side. Needs a certain personnel, but is effective.
Mind you they did have Batistuta and Montella up front, with Totti just behind...

I concur with these sentiments.

I accept that Andersen is a ball-playing central defender who can spray passes around to good effect but his sheer lack of pace is alarming and his mobility on the turn is called into question.
He was Lyon's record signing but a year later they were content to loan him to Fulham for a loan fee of £900K with an option to buy.

Willo.. good to see you back. I concur with our feelings re this. Hope you and the Misses had a good New Years. We're coming into a great time to be a Palace supporter (I think) so looking forward to hearing from you more again.

Pretty sure this is a Guaita rather than a CB issue. Our record at defending set pieces was no better under RH last season. He's a good shot stopper but a definite liability if the ball is crossed in.
