Main lesson learnt is that recruitement is everything. The manager first and foremost. His name was a pulling factor for several of our joiners too. As most have known for a while - Luka's time has probably come and gone. I'm not certain Wilf is the write-off some seem to think, despite his idiocy. And we need another CB who can defend and play a bit. Also some back up at LB - I dont wanna ever see Schlupp there and I'm not sure Jairo is really anything more than an emergency fill in.

In the last few games we have halted the issue of letting in soft goals from set pieces which is encouraging. Our midfielders get on the score sheet. We can pass ball out from the back rather than playing long ( i do notice that if we are under pressure and are leading we still tend to play it long ). We need to play Kouyate and/or Benteke to help defend set pieces. I think we have found a very good player in Will Hughes and Michael Olise, if he is not already a very good player, he will be one in the near future. His first touch is to die for, he has pace and his set piece delivery is better that we have had for ages. We don't miss Zaha when he does not play and can win without him ( though i think he is still in our best 11 ) We are probably going to get better rather than hold our own with the amount of young players we have now who will peak over the next few years. Our core players from last season Ward, Mitchell, Kouyate, McCarthur, Zaha, Benteke and Ayew are still important. Edited by viveasheagle (05 Jan 2022 3.25am)

Main lesson is PV is good and players are getting used to playing his way, but it takes time and we will continue to improve across the season. I don’t think we’re desperately in need of anyone this January, but if the right player becomes available at the right price… Our biggest ‘hole’ is cover for McArthur (and replacing Gallagher when he goes back to Chelsea next window), but I think we can trust PV, Dougie and Parish to sort then.
