It's not technically his first contract since resigning from Utd. He signed an improved contract 4 years ago. I would guess the sell on clause is linked to his registration as a player, but like a charge on a house, only comes into force, when change of ownership.

That sounds most likely the answer.

Thank you for the answers , very interesting take on it . I think it has a lot to do with the reluctance to sell him .

I think this is probably the answer but would probably be challenged in the courts if he was subsequently sold for a large sum.
It would have to be clear that his contract had ended and he had signed again as a free agent. As it is likely any offer is going to be on reduced terms anyway he will probably turn it down and then explore offers as a free agent. If as I suspect offers are well below his current wage it may come down to signing on fee. As it will be his last big pay day.
The current contract was designed to keep him at club until the end of his top level playing days and remove his buy out clause. If Zaha or his representatives seriously thought that by reintroducing this clause would give him a larger pay day they would have suggested it. In short term he would have to take pay drop and I don't think he will.ie drop to 80k pw and get right to talk to any club who offer 25 million.
I think the club would accept an extension on those sorts of terms

Perfectly reasonable assumption, I would however suggest that our reluctance to sell him could be directly linked to our dependence on him in the team.

With PV's arrival, implementation of new tactics, new players and Wilf's 20's coming to an end with signs of him slowing down in pace but not his attitude problems, would not be surprised to see him leave in the near future. I desperately hope for Wilf's Palace career to come to the best possible end, whenever it does, however this is beginning to look less and less likely. C'est la vie I suppose.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
