All mouth and no trousers.

The powers government purports to introduce for the most part already exist. British judges deliver British justice based on British laws.

UK courts do not, as government suggests, blindly follow case law from the European Court of Human Rights.

The EHCR is nothing to do with the EU and was set up primarily by the UK anyway.

And Raaab admits we will not be leaving the EHCR anyway so what's the point.

Another desperate and doomed attempt to increase deportations, can't think of anything else, if it ever actually came about they will simply choose another defence or avoid in countless ways.

A bit like Raab himself, a waste of space.

The main issue is the abuse of the "right to a family life". You might be happy with foreign murderers, rapist and paedophiles being allowed to stay in the UK but I suspect many of us are not.

The right to free speech also needs to be toughened up as it seems to be under attack on a daily basis.

Harrry Cole, the Conservative political commentator, said last night Raab isn"t taking anything away from the current human rights act, merely sticking post it notes on it.

In practice the UK does not have the right to deport unless the receiving country agrees.

And why would they, the EU doesn't.

They serve their sentences already by English law tried by English judges.

You must have been glad when Thatcher hosted Pinochet too.

Hmm Other countries don't seem to have this problem. I suspect that you are right on one point that the Tories are tinkering around the edges I would be much tougher like the Aussies and the Yanks these people are convicted of serious crimes after all.

As for countries who refuse to take back their own citizens there are many levers the government could use if Boris has the balls to encourage them ultimately I would make it clear we would not accept any citizens from a country that refuse to take them back.

Raab is doing this 'for political correctness'.

Well thank you so much we really need political correctness during the current emergency.

In other words it is useless in practice, as he is.

Surprised Rabb bothered with this as he stated the Police and the Law aren't bothered with past crimes.

Raab to claim overhaul of human rights law will counter ‘political correctness’ - [Link]

I posted this in the other thread but this is more relevant clearly. It's a nice soundbite to throw out there to get people on side, but does that really do justice to how it would be overhauled. If people worry about covid rules etc they should rightly also worry about where this might lead.

I honestly think people are being compleetly, and unfortunately willingly hoodwinked because it's framed as 'can't throw immigrants out' or some kind of 'PC gone mad' angle, when the realities and complexities of freedoms that apply to us all extend way beyond that and you can bet they will be chipped away at like nobody's business.

"Article 2: Right to life

Article 3: Freedom from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment

Article 4: Freedom from slavery and forced labour

Article 5: Right to liberty and security

Article 6: Right to a fair trial

Article 7: No punishment without law

Article 8: Respect for your private and family life, home and correspondence

Article 9: Freedom of thought, belief and religion

Article 10: Freedom of expression

Article 11: Freedom of assembly and association

Article 12: Right to marry and start a family

Article 14: Protection from discrimination in respect of these rights and freedoms

Protocol 1, Article 1: Right to peaceful enjoyment of your property

Protocol 1, Article 2: Right to education

Protocol 1, Article 3: Right to participate in free elections

"

Sure there are some positive changes that can be made and its right that its in our hands (if you can call 'our governments hands' that), but there's plenty of the above that we all rely on, and that I doubt the government would be particularly sad to see the back of. Be careful what you wish for comes to mind. We already see pushes to infringe upon protest and the like and outright lies around the 'kill the bill' protests and Tony Blair also chipped away at various rights prior. Careful what you wish away and where it might take you.
