One of the greatest in British racing takes his final checkered flag. Will be sadly missed by many.
Systematically dragged down by the lawmakers |

Met him briefly at Silverstone F1 tyre test in 1987. He'd only been paralysed from the waist down a year earlier, but there he was back at work and still leading the team.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

He had a real lifelong passion for the sport. Good to see so many in motor racing and elsewhere tipping their hat to him. RIP.

Frank Williams was a real, old school motor sport fanatic who fought hard through some pretty torrid times to build one of the sports most successful F1 teams. A bit like Richard Branson he ran some of his early business from a phone box after his line was cut off because of unpaid bills. He adored Senna's driving style and managed to bring him into his team after a long courtship, only for him to be killed driving his car on that fateful weekend at Imola. Williams was much admired for his work ethic which showed when he returned to control his team as a paraplegic so soon after he crashed his car with devastating consequences. A lovely, gentle man who lived much longer than his doctors predicted. RIP.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I remember being at Silverstone for the 1979 British Grand Prix and seeing Williams win their first ever Formula One World Championship race.Clay Regazzoni was driving. That was probably the first time I witnessed a crowd invasion of the track - after the race of course! Prior to his accident he was a very fit man, and, ironically, when his crash happened he was dashing back from France to take part in a half-marathon - I believe his PB was around 1hr 18mins. If you have a ever done a half-marathon you will appreciate how impressive that is. Franks involvement in racing started way back in the 1960s when the likes of Graham Hill, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jack Brabham etc. were still top of their game. With his passing another link with that era has been lost.
