How successful has this window been?

Most people, including myself, have been saying/thinking that this has been a successful window for the club. But has it? Yes we've rightly shipped out a lot of dead wood and players who were way past their best and we have brought in five new, young players. However, one of those is on loan in Belgium and we know little about him and he's presumably one for the future. Of the others we have two promising and talented CBs, an exciting AM in Olise who is currently injured and a great loanee in Gallagher who brings much needed energy to our midfield. So all good so far. However, it is in attack that we are still woefully lacking, as last season we were one of the lowest scoring teams in the league. We've rightly let Townsend go but apart from the possibility of Rak Sakyi stepping up we haven't strengthened our attack and we've yet to see if the new additions will result in a better service to our forwards. So to sum up, in my view it has been a pretty good window but not great and it needs to be enhanced by at least 2-3 players who will contribute to our attacking potential, with a RW and striker being essential, plus one or two wing-backs. If we can do that then I would say this has probably been our best window ever

There's still a way to go yet. In a "normal season" we wouldn't have brought in any by this time. One of the most heartening points about the window is that Dougie et al have clearly been operating on a long term plan and the signings don't have the feel of short term fixes from whatever happens to be around at the time. It's a sea change really. When was the last time Palace looked like the club with an actual strategy in place? Compare and contrast with the FdB debacle.

Personally think our attack is being underrated. Early last season we were level with City more or less for goals scored. Everything fell off a cliff of course. My take is that was as much a result of playing 4th 5th choices at CB as anything else - everyone pushed back to cover an obvious weakness. One for instance here is Jimmy Mc - non-existent really as an attacking threat last season as deployed way back. Now he has licence to play a more forward role.

Being one of the lowest scoring teams last season is surely a result of the tactics employed by Roy. Conceding possession and defending deep was our default position. Yes it worked and we survived but some of the football was truly dire. Hopefully PV will bring a more pro active style of play, produce some attractive football and we will spend more time attacking than defending. Lets hope it works.

We’re still linked with Edouard at Celtic who’s 23 and in the last year of his contract. They need to cash in and he’s reportedly on £19,000 a week so wages shouldn’t be a problem. He can also play wide right.

There is still a way to go, in the window, but so far I think we need to be pretty happy with the business and most importantly the intent of the club.

With the exception of Eze, I cant remember the last time we signed an up and coming exciting player. We usually sign players on the way down.

There is risk with unproven players at this level, but there is risk with any player.

Who knows how much we have left to spend, but I’d love to see Nelson, and potentially Lookman too (given our history of tricky wingers they fit our mould). Then if there is an option of striker out there that wouldn’t go amiss.

I think we do also need to remember that we are building on a decent team, not a relegation threatened one. When all fit, we are stronger than we were last season. The only exception for me is LB, I think PVA would have done well in this new look side.

Well when a transfer window has me feeling the way I did when we yoinked cabaye I'd like to think its a pretty good window yeah.

As for how successful.. only time will tell, but we can all see what's happening and due to the nature of such a change we may not know how successful this window has been until near the end of the season.

For me the club has gone about this transfer window the right way:
1. They allowed deadwood and expensive players on the wane to depart. (Yes, it would have been nice to have kept Andros for another year but you can't have everything)
2. They picked up Olise for a small fee before anyone else
3. They sorted the central defence issues by spending (for Palace) serious money on two quality ball-playing CBs who will be needed for the style of football both PV and the club want us to play.
4. They have brought in a busy box-to-box midfielder albeit only on loan.

And we haven't been held to ransom for these incomings!

These are the building blocks for a more secure side and 3 and 4 above are here for the beginning of the season.

There are still nearly 3 weeks of the transfer window left and it appears we may still be looking to do further business.

So far then, it's been good and IMO we have a stronger 1st team group than we ended with last season albeit with a couple of key players currently injured.

... pretty good so far as long as we aren't still waiting for the injured Olise to make his debut this time next year
