Don't have a clue whether this is pure click bait or if it is optimism. The Kabak story has gone a little quiet so maybe the so called sports reporters have got bored and come up with this on. 'IF' this is true and we are after him, I personally think he would be a great replacement for Cahill. Proven in the Premiership and a strong contender for a starting place. This would give Viera a headache over who to choose for the back two, which in my opinion is something that a manager wouldn't groan about. Great signing if we could pull it off.

This interest was reported a while back now and we have since signed 2 new centre backs for a combined 30-35m. I just can’t see us looking at another centre back…certainly not one that will compete for a 1st team spot purely because of the money involved.

He’s also on a reported 67k a week. At that level of wage he simply doesn’t fit our new wage structure.

For me it’s more likely to be agents linking their players with us when they knew we were after players in this position.

He is likely to be pushed to 4th choice at West Ham and will probably not play.

He would be one of 3 at Palace (poor Tomkins and Kelly) but all may play (if it works) if we went back 3; and we may have the quality to rotate and not over-load onto a fixed back 2 as we have done for years.

We lost 3 CB and only gained 2. It was a problem area last season.

The player is in the model of what we are after i.e. only 24, French U21 etc.

It would be a clincher if (?) he can also play full back if critical cover required.

Huge potential and good sell on.

However:

1. He is contracted to 2023. Expensive.
2. As you say, the wages...
3. Not guaranteed to start.

On wages, I see that a lot on here. If a player moves to another club, the terms binding at the selling club are not equally binding at the buying club. It is normal employment stuff. I get that a player will want to recoup as much as he can in a short career and will be looking at a step up, not down, especially at 24. However, there is also the cache of international call up if he thrives, performance bonuses, sponsorship deals which are unlikely to come for a bench warmer and the need to play. I don't buy this nonsense that players are happy to be squad additions if the money's right.

Thus, theoretically, I suspect he would come to us on a reduced wage and a reasonable fee unless there are other options who are more desperate and are willing to pay at or more than £67k a week in the current depressed market?

Guess - he will stay at West Ham to "fight for his place". This click bait was planted to expose the risk of his departure, to stake his case at West Ham and as a flag raiser to any potential suitors out there.

That’s just it though…why move to Palace to fight for a place in the first team on less money than fighting for a place in the West Ham team?

You say he’d be 3rd choice here but that’s not a given. He may even be behind Kouyate AND Tomkins…it’s dependent on the form seen in training surely.

I just don’t see us spending another 12-16m on another CB. We may have lost 3 but one of those was near invisible for 3 seasons…I don’t think Sakho needs to be replaced. Not unless we sell Kouyate that is.

On the one hand I agree; on the other, Sakho's absence was sorely felt.

I know he plays a dual role, but I want to see Kouyate back in midfield.

Sorely missed from the days he could contribute to a game of football yes…unfortunately those days are over 2 years ago. So in terms of last years team he’s not missed one bit but that’s just IMO.

Kouyate can still play centre mid and be backup for centre back. He’s great like that

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Vieira has said (either since Chelsea defeat or game 2 against Brentford) that he was looking to bring 1 or 2 more forward players. Right now Edouard looks like signing today and there's Boga rumours (although I'm highly sceptical on that one).

I just don't see us buying a 3rd CB this window when we still got Kelly, Tomkins and even Kouyate to slot in if needs be. That's not to Diop isn't a good player or wouldn't be an improvement to our current options, but rather it would seem bizarre to me if this was pulled off now.
Maybe next summer depending on how the season goes or even Jan when if we get struck with unfortunate injuries
