You haven't paid road tax ever, I would suggest. Not sure how old you are, but road tax ceased in 1937. You pay a license fee. Modern vehicles with low emissions pay zero license fees. I believe bicycles are low emission too, so would be exempt. Insurance, as I'm sure you know, is extremely fickle in paying out, and a cyclist involved in a road accident is likely to be dead, therefore negating the need for it in the first place.

I'm not a cyclist, but cannot see how ID for cycles/cyclists could be implemented without considerable cost to either the tax paying public or the cyclists themselves. Either expense would have a detrimental effect, as car drivers would feel they would be paying twice if the cost was added to tax, or further congested as cyclists abandon their now expensive cycles and get back into their cars.

Not all cyclists involved in road accidents are dead thankfully, lots of knocks happen that they have a claim up for, and quite often due to their own negligance by not following the highway code! As i already said, theirs lots of useless car drivers tearing up the roads to, and the police should clamp down on those to if they are breaking the law with excessive speed or wrecklesness. This zero licence fee will soon be scrapped I would imagine, once everyone has purchased said vehicles, and then the bicycle brigade can pay their way, as im sure they are itching to do, and maybe check that the fees are going on the tarmac, traffic light cctc, pedestrian crossing cctv, etc etc.

Didn't you look at the data from Brake.org? You have cited one hit and run by a cyclist as proof they need regulation. Whereas the casualty rate of cyclists to pedestrians is about 5-1, with most of those casualties caused by careless vehicle drivers. Every twenty minutes someone dies or is seriously injured on the road. You have one incident (three if you include the others quoted earlier) of a cyclist being the cause of death in the last two years. And you think cyclists are the problem. Mate, cycling might slow you down, but it's not as deadly as driving a car.

I read some of it to be fair, but its the blatant red light jumping in the city thats an issue, not the number of fatalities. As i already said, i"m not anti cyclist, I like nothing more than seeing someone taking a leisurely ride, obeying the rules, stopping at a zebra etc etc. But the amount of those who don"t, are usually the lycra brigade in a hurry, there lies the problem. Car drivers who take off at 60, only to be caught at the next red, should also be clamped down on. Another thing I see is cycle riders punching/slapping car doors or mirrors, although it never happened to me, but theres a lot of it about, obviously they think the driver is at fault , probably for not seeing him as he went through the red!

This was a tragic incident and the cyclist was riding without any regard for others. The sentence was fully deserved.

The two year sentence compares with similar sentences given to motorists convicted of causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

The maximum sentence that you could receive for causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving is 5 years and for causing death by driving whilst unlicensed, uninsured or disqualified it is two years imprisonment.

The real danger on the roads is to cyclists. 140 cyclists were killed on the road in the UK in 2020 an increase from 100 in 2019.

Between 2005 and 2018, 8.6% of the 5,835 pedestrian deaths in England, Scotland and Wales occurred on pavements. The majority of these (542) involved motor vehicles. There were a total of 6 pedestrian-cycle footway collisions.

In England, 42% of people over 5 have access to a cycle. Almost a third of all motorists also cycle. Over 85% of people over 18 who cycle also hold a driving licence.

Although the data show that nearly all motorists are cyclists. This cyclist and cyclists in general are not the same. They are not responsible for each other's behaviour etc. Just as there are bad drivers there are bad cyclists.

I have a car and I have a bicycle, (actually three), I use the appropriate method of transport for the journey I wish to make.

The other day a cyclist was handed a 2 year prison sentence [ with the time off as he spent time on remand ] for going through a red light , knocking a pedestrian down and killing him . In my view a very soft sentence . I wonder what he would have got if was driving a car .
The government response to this is to include in the highway code a section on giving cyclist and pedestrian right of way .
The only people who read the highway code are the ones who take their motor bike or car test . I forgot , also the nerd cyclist who always think they are the right .
It is about time cyclist should take a road test , get a licence ad be insured .
I see they are building more cycle lane which will be
under used , if at all .
mini rant over

Talking of cycling I've been planning to get on the mrs' exercise bike for about two years now and still get no further than staring at it rather than getting on it. My ticker will likely pack in before I actually ever get any cardio exercise under my belt.
