He was a brilliant player, one of the very best. Far too many simply follow other people's viewpoint just to feel 'part' of something. It's become fashionable to criticise Pele's amazing footballing career just for criticism's sake and many doing so never even saw him play, particularly in his home league and country.

The treatment he got in 1966, I believe against Italy, probably outlines what a great player he was and how he was feared by any opponent.
People think Wilf and Grealish get kicked all over the park, try and find a video of that game, it was brutal but also criminal.

For once we agree.

I can separate the man from the player, the man has some questionable attitudes and arrogance the player was one of the greatest if not GOAT.

The thing about the 1000 goals was a publicity stunt by the Americans apparently Pele never gave much credence to it.

If he hadn't have been a great I don't think his reputation would have lasted, it has. You can argue who is GOAT but there is no doubt in my mind that he should be in the mix up.

I have seen all the usual names listed play including Pele and the obvious factor is that people seldom agree about who is the best.

Pele played the bulk of his games in Brazil so was not watched by Europeans in the same way that competing players were.

Personally I enjoyed watching Cruyff a pure majestic player.

Pele certainly had a couple of great world cups but needed to play in the best leagues too, if he was going to be the greatest. Anyway, he must have done something right - we're still talking about him.

Brazil didn't play Italy in 1966, so their serial fouling - expertly demonstrated in the Euro 2020 final - wasn't a factor on that occasion. Portugal certainly kicked him about in the final group game.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

From an article in The Guardian.

"Their best player, Pelé, was kicked so much in the first game against Bulgaria (“I think every team will take care of him in the same manner,” said their coach) that he could play no part in the second, a 3-1 defeat by Hungary when Brazil had two goals disallowed, and he then spent much of the third as a virtual spectator after Portugal’s João Morais fouled him and, when he tried to get up and play on, fouled him again a bit harder."

For what it is worth I think it is quite ridiculous to outrightly dismiss him as a player and to make meaningless comparisons with players from other eras.

You know a Brazilian that people always forget? Rivaldo. He was amazing, better than Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and on par with Ronaldinho.
If I could pick any Brazilian to be in our current team it would be him (well, not current day Rivaldo, obviously)
