Town and cities were almost exclusively built next to water. Whether that be coast or river matters not. Water was, and still is, the life giver. Either for drinking, fishing or transportation, it was necessary to be near water. When towns and cities were smaller, the rainfall could easily make it's way to the rivers and streams, and eventually the sea/ocean. But, guess what? We expanded the towns and cities to accommodate the population that thrived from the water the lived next to. Now, the water needs to come through those towns and cities to get to the oceans and seas.

Good point Tim, there have been more and more deadly floods over time. I think someone else pointed that out...

Obviously the reporting of events in the modern age is different to hundreds of years ago.

You are implying the total number of floods in the previous two centuries was 16.

The wiki list is clearly not complete for the older historical records but much more so for recent times.

But you know this I assume.

Seems the flood warning systems need review

I'm not implying anything other than your conclusion on the article you posted, was not supported by the article you posted.

My post linked to a wikipedia page did not draw a conclusion.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Sorry Owen, maybe I have chosen the wrong word. Maybe I should have said you are trying to make a point using the wiki as support, but the wiki does not support the point you are trying to make?

I may have misunderstood you so please correct me if I'm wrong: You appear to be suggesting that the European floods have been a serious problem for centuries, the scale of the problem being nothing new. And to back up this suggestion, you have linked to a wikipedia article which, on it's own, actually shows the opposite of what you are trying to suggest.

But if this is not the point you are trying to make please feel free to clarify what your point was, and I will apologise for jumping to conclusions.

Am i to take that I have understood your point correctly then the first time, since you've made no attempt to put me right? In which case will you be man enough to admit that, according to wikipedia, the number of deadly floods in europe is in fact increasing. That could well be down to increased urbanisation, changes in reporting or indeed climate change, or a combination of factors we could discuss at length!

Tim very Good valid points. What also happens is Rivers become culverted as Towns expand to give more land to build on. Theses culverts are now undersized for the rainfall and stormwater run off, they also increase the speed of the water by being fairly straight with smooth walls this means the flows reach pinch points at a greater velocity plus they can not overtop to natural flood plains. The current thinking is to move back to more natural flood management. Rivers have also been perched (Moved out of the lowland and it's natural course and up the hillside in an artificial location thus when the river bursts it's banks the lowland becomes flooded.

It could be that time delays between these events is natural. The grand canyon surely wasn't formed by one deluge. Maybe 1000s over many 1000s of years. Maybe 2 in one year then none for 50 then 7 in a year etc. As we are seeing now. Just saying it could all be pretty normal.

According to the conclusionless wikipedia page the number of floods in Europe is not quantifiable .It does indicate from the listed floods the number of fatalities per listed flood is reducing, not the the thousands of deaths shown in the historical list.

Couple of points for you.

Increased reporting would not affect the actual number of floods, so no, I would not agree the number of deadly floods in Europe is actually increasing.

Your keyboard shift key appears to be defective.

I still accept your apology.
