The cavalry charge towards having everything powered by electricity is mind bending. Not just for vehicles. The government want us to do away with our gas boilers too.

As The Dolphin says above, where is all the power coming from? Certainly not here. Our existing power stations can't provide enough of the stuff. Remember the issue in the Channel Islands recently when France threatened to cut off their power supply in the dispute over fishing rights.

Wind farms are spreading like a disease and are a blot on the countryside, not to mention the seaside. Nuclear is the only way to go, but the cost and risks are enormous.

On the subject of electric cars, an 84 year old chap has just converted his 1934 Austin 7 to run on lithium batteries, just to give himself something to do.

All true old fella, but think of the lovely business!

Everyone conveniently forgets the "green" cost of making the batteries - isn't making one battery the equivalent damage that running a deisel car for 5 years does?
Also creating the electricity required to run these cars.
The emissions are enormous.
The car industry and governments around the world are conning us the same way they did with diesel engines.
They build cars so well now that they last a long time so they now need zillions of us to HAVE to buy new cars.
A massive con and massive damage to the planet.

Yes, its been going on for years, Boris as mayor made us London cabbies get rid of our fairway taxis, 15 year age limit, even though they had the best nissan engines in, to buy the tx1/2, ford engines, totally useless, all forthe environment! A scientist told Boris to bog ov, he said it was greener to keep the old nissans on the road, than building a new taxi from scratch, it fell on Boris deaf ears!

I saw that the cost of replacing your boiler, if/when this new law comes in, with the new underfloor stuf that goes with it, will be around £18000, as oppose to the cost of a new gas boiler £1800/£3000, the good news is their might be boris grants/loans, first come etc! Win win-for business!

Maybe the Hydrogen car is the answer I don't know but anything that gets petrol and diesel off the road and reduces our dependency on oil sounds good to me.

Good post but I wonder if tech is moving fast enough. If everyone went elec today the grid would collapse

I can't see gas boilers being phased out just yet as the technology isn't quite there yet and as you say the price is crazy money.

A noble ambition but all the alternatives have problems at the moment.

Lets hope so Badger, leave that taking out a mortgage for a boiler to the next generation!

At the present rate of global warming we will have fried long any of this comes on-stream.

Amazingly the UK has zero emissions target of 2050!

What will probably happen is that boilers under a certain efficency rating will be phased out.
If a sum can be put forwards to show high efficiency is as good as electric heat pumps including using the energy from the grid to run it then it's no difference.
Alongside that there will possibly be some sort of incentive to replace a low efficiency boiler. If you can get up to 90% efficient then it's a good boiler.
Not many out there at present but with time it will happen.
