I can just about remember that show in the seventies as a child. I also remember Lenny Henry 'whiting' up for his crack at Hollywood.....I think there's been a recent series in the US with blacks 'whiting' up. Isn't there a film called White chicks from a few years ago where a couple of black actors played white women?

Anyone remember the black and white minstrel show live from the london palladium every Sunday night? That was a load of white guys all in white suits with black boot polish (or something like it) on their faces and white lips? If they did that now it would bring the house down. How this world has changed. I remember it well. It was a prime time BBC show for about 20 years and it ran as a London stage version for about 10 years. My parents went to see it. Until colour telly came in, the 'blackface' make-up was actually RED, not black. This is because red showed up on TV as more black than black would (if you get me). Similarly, in early hospital dramas like 'Emergency Ward 10', the actors wore yellow doctors' coats, nurses uniforms etc, which showed up on TV as whiter than white would. Not a lot of people know this! With hindsight, if only the show had been called 'The Red and White Minstrel Show', then nobody would now be offended and it might still be running instead of tosh featuring Danny Dyer or suchlike.
