Hitched west Wales and Ireland. Hitched to lyon and back and home from pilzen.

The scariest was a Hitch to Glasgow where the wagon driver kindly dropped me at easterhouse. Not sure how I got out of that khasi alive. Not a place welcoming to the English.

Yes it's a rare sight these days.

I did my share of thumbing lifts in my youth. The risks obviously work both ways - you never know who is going to pick you up, nor who you are going to pick up.

I had a few hairy experiences.

In the south of France in the early 70s my mate and I got picked up by a Frenchman in a 2 CV. He proceeded to cut up another motorist who then drove us off the road and set about our driver.

Another time I was on the M1 when the lorry that had given my girlfriend and I a lift had a tyre blow out.

Then there was the time I got picked up late at night by a bloke who it quickly became apparent was pissed.

Good to read some of your hitchhiking stories and if it was risky in the old days it sure is riskier today. Certainly wouldn't want my grandchildren to attempt it.

One time I'd been to the Dutch GP and got a lift away from the circuit from a bloke in an Alpha. All fine except he lived in a small village and dropped me at a crossroads nearby. Hardly any traffic and it was like that scene in North by Northwest.I was waiting for the crop duster to start dive bombing me. Eventually a young lad took me all the way to the ferry terminal despite it being well out of his way.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
