Did any one watch the highlights of the game this morning on ITV4. A very enjoyable watch. Being a regional programme, and with no need to keep the interest of fans outside of the London region, there was close to 30 minute of highlights. I actually went to the match. It was very entertaining end to end stuff, but with Palace winning 2-0. It also saw the return of Malcolm Allison to Selhurst - he received a very warm welcome. Perhaps the most remarkable thing was that apart from Burridge, every player had come through the junior ranks at Palace - Smillie, Walsh, Sansom, Murphy, P.Hinshelwood, Hilaire, Nicholas, Swindlehurst, Gilbert, Kember and Cannon.

I'm surprised nobody's picked up on this before - it's an amazing stat. 3 or 4 years later we had Mullery and a crop of past it journeymen - there should be an official enquiry into our 1980-81 season - Bloye, Sainsbury's, Venables and the best players exodus to QPR - so sad how that dream was killed.

It was very sad that so much promise could evaporate in the course of 12 months.

they were doing a nostalgia slot on the Big Match Revisited yesterday, which is an exponential helping of nostalgia - Palace 1 Arsenal 5 Nov' 69. Watching us in that kit almost makes me hard. Per Bartram scored a sh*t goal for us - I think Chelsea beat us by the same score at Selhust that season, and we lost 4-1 at home in a cup game to one of those two the same season. They went back to 79/80 after a 0-0 between Arsenal and Liverpool - they showed the league table - we were third, with nearly all homegrown players.

Apart from Bert Head's regular sorties across the border to snap up Scotsmen, he also dabbled in Denmark. You mentioned Per Bartram, but we also had Borg Thorup, another Dane, around the same time as Per. Both equally ineffective.

Irrelevant but shortly before that, the England U-21 team played a game at Selhurst. I believe it was Peter Taylor's debut, and he scored, a rocket into the top corner if I remember right.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |

I think you'll find it was the U23s back then and the game was a 3-1 win v Czechoslovakia.
