It's to do with breathing through your mouth, I believe. I often have to spit when I go for a run but never feel the need when I go for a long walk and only occasionally when I cycle. I think that the FA made it a yellow card offense when football restated last season but I can't remember a single instance of a yellow being given. I do recall a big fuss about spitting in the Tour de France but think it was the cyclists being spat at rather than the other way around. I did find this online [Link]
