Yes, evening news on a saturday had the football results, the standard didn"t on a saturday.

both the news and the standard had a classified edition on Saturday . I worked in the newsagents at Pollards Hill during the early '70s and there were queues of people at 5:15 pm waiting for them to arrive.

What a night that was , 2-0 looking good then bang 2-2 remmber trying to pull down the fence to stop the game , Glad we didnt , back to the train beers left on there for return journey , how trusting was we then lol ,

Then the fun started , friday back to selhurst for FA youth cup what a crowd , Im from Essex so spent most of the time walking the streets saturday with my mates radio , they didnt mention about palace getting promotion found out from watching BBC final score , punched hole in mates ceiling then run for the train to spend most of the night around selhurst park ,

so very quiet time all in all

I was there. Amazing scenes at the end. We were still celebrating the 3rd when the 4th went in!

Two Palace got on the pitch (large fence) and a group of 30 Wrexham came at them. We shouted a warning. They looked at each other and went towards them lol. The wrexham legged it.

The walk back to the station was entertaining. Even the old bill were having a pop.

Got one of the specials up from Euston and drove home from there to Basildon. The piston rings gave up the ghost on the engine so I nursed it home at 20mph! Got home at 5am. Then went to work.

I re-built the engine over the summer just in time for the season to start.

Great days. We always took a fair crowd away.

I was sitting on a wall down Regina road. We waited for news and someone raced up the road shouting 4 2 4 2 like we had just won the league lol.

I used to pick someone up from there but lost touch with them. No internet or mobiles in those days!

It has been forgotten over the years that after this result it wasn't only Wrexham who could have denied us promotion on the Saturday after. Wrexham of course lost to Mansfield leaving us in the third promotion spot but Rotherham also could have overtaken us but needed to win by six goals to overcome our goal difference.

Whilst we all turned up at Selhurst for the reserve match, everyone was concentrating on the Wrexham score, suddenly news came through that Rotherham were 4-0 up. If they could get six and Mansfield won, the Millers would go up alongside Mansfield and Brighton.

Fortunately for us their game finished 4-1 and we were back in the Second Division.

I am ready, are you? Sheffield here we come.
