I suspect when you wrote all of this out, you answered your original question.

I disagree with the drive for Scottish Independence, especially the fanatical way Nicola Sturgeon leads the SNP.

So strongly did I feel that I stopped buying Scotch whisky and now only buy American, Irish and Welsh brands.

However, my son-in-law gave me a rather fine single malt Scotch as a Christmas gift. I received it with thanks and have since enjoyed drinking it.

You can take these prejudices only so far don't you think?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Yes, exactly. Don't do yourself any harm over things like principles.

Your may well be right there. Some people are too sneaky by half! Maybe if they change it to 'no gifts from planet earth' we'll know for certain .

So he'd be quite happy with a gift made by a 7 year old working 12 hours a day in a pakistan sweatshop?

Can't the guy just wrap the gift back up and wait until a Birthday/Christmas and pass it on ?

I hope the OP's (Shek's Crows eye) mate has no existing materials in his house that may be made in China ?
Did he check where the carpets were manufactured ? double glazing/door panels ? door fittings and security ?

I think the receiver of the gift has an applaudable moral compass, but pretty poor judgement of its application.

I was surprised to read last week (can't remember where i read it) that about 30 Chinese gold miners were stuck in a mine collapse since the beginning of January 2021.
Does anyone remember Bhopal and Union Carbide ? The USA company built a chemical plant so dangerous, it wouldn't be authorised in America. So they built it in India and it blew up killing loads of people and poisoning groundwater for generations.

I wouldn't have anything anything from Europe in my house now. Except that young Dutch Au Pair

I am not buying petrol any more, because of Saudi involvement in the situation in Yemen.

So please, no gifts containing any plastics (or oil derivatives) for Forest
