As for a young CB, I suspect our scouts are still sizing up Bella-Kotchap at Bochum and will make a move for him when and if satisfied he's a long term prospect. Unlike Liverpool and other big clubs (and even the likes of West Ham and Newcastle) we have to be careful with the pennies. The experience of Benteke and Sakho has possibly taught the board that expensive mistakes can set you back for several years. IMO Eze was the first youngster we brought in that we'd been stalking for a good period of time to be a long term signing and he looks like a gem in the making. Mateta may well be the second. I don't expect us to be making panic buys or knee-jerk reactions. I think the club may be adopting a 'get it right first time' approach, so that we buy players who will fit in successfully and hopefully only go up in value. Indeed. How can a 25 year old Preston defender who is deemed good enough for Liverpool for only £2 million go under our radar when we’re crying out for youthful centre backs?! Same goes for the Turkish guy. I’m sure Roy has a plan though #inroywetrust Liverpool are beset with injuries they can afford to bring in a defender who may not be top draw as cover just until the summer. How often have we seen this e.g. Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea decent player never going to be a regular part of their first team.

Guaita signed a contract, albeit weeks ago, and we got a guy on loan who we might buy, so a big window for us. We should be thankful we have a club.

That analogy doesn’t really work then and the OP’s point is totally valid. Our issue is more that we have a management team that don’t feel we can risk anything at any point for fear of dropping a point or letting in a goal. If you never take a chance, you’ll never know what you might have missed. Edited by Eaglecoops (02 Feb 2021 10.49am)

Does he genuinely believe this is a bargain and potential long term Liverpool player or does he see it as a low risk stop gap? If the former then you are correct we should have tried to sign him if the later then I see no point in signing a stop gap as we have enough to muddle through to the end of the season.

Mark Lawrenson didn't seem particularly won over and as a former Preston and Liverpool defender his view is probably as valid as any as I imagine he has seen Davies quite a bit. He doesn't even think he will play. Just because he has signed for Liverpool doesn't mean he is PL quality. However, as he now has the Liverpool seal of approval he is now of course a £10m player before he even kicks a ball; win-win for them. Then again, he might be amazing!

We signed Jake O'brien from Cork City. Never seen him, quite rated youngster. Went under the radar - saw news yesterday but was drinking.

Klopp has all but said it is a low risk stop gap signing. If the player turns out to be a top premier league player then: 1. It will be a surprise to everyone who has seen him play it seems. 2. Palace will hardly be alone in not having spotted this bargain. We will be one of 19 Premier League teams not to have done so. Hardly a stick to beat the club with.
