The last of the great commentators from my youth - not bad golfer either!

Such sad news.
I have always enjoyed listening to the "Voice of golf" and he seemed such a charming man.
He really was a legendary commentator.

My thoughts go out to all his family and friends.
RIP.

I have to admit that once upon a time I used to see him as being comfortably smug - a description that can sometimes apply to the game of golf as a whole.

However in more recent years I came to appreciate just how good he was behind the microphone - relaxed, droll, witty and a master of just saying enough, and never too much.

Probably the last of that band of commentators I grew up with - John Arlott, Peter O'Sullevan, Bill McLaren, Kenneth Wolstenholme, Dan Maskell.....

Me too Pete.
He was a proper old fashioned commentator who knew his stuff.
Proper bloke who loved a drink as well.loved
He used the silence better than anyone.
RIP

A round with Allis was what got me interested in golf.
A slightly different spelling of the title had the same effect with p***.

Oh my word, he's gone in the hole

Actually Alliss gave me a complete misunderstanding of golf. Watching him on TV on Pro-Celebrity Golf made me think golf was all about having a nice leisurely walk and a good chat, whilst hitting a ball around (now and again).

What a wake-up call I had 25 years ago, with virtually having to run around the course, with a queue of golfers piling up behind me.

He made a tough sport look so easy.

So, I bear a grudge that Alliss made a ferocious sport appear congenial.
There are only 2 times I felt like golf was in the Alliss 'mode'.
Playing early-doors in Scotland, where you put your green fees in an honesty box. An hour later, and countless lost balls, I still had people coming up behind as i was on the 18th.
And New Zealand where farmers make excess land into ad-hoc golf courses. Throw your Green Fees in the bucket, and off you go,...but try to miss the sheep 5hlt.

And as an earlier poster said, Alliss's silence was as effective as his voice.
