It took a long time to prove the link between cancer and smoking. And the biggie for me is that cars now no longer have cigarette lighters, but are now termed "auxiliary power sockets". I am still young enough to remember people "lighting up" after a meal in a restaurant Edited by Forest Hillbilly (04 Dec 2020 9.04am)

The tobacco companies knew back in the 1950's that smoking caused cancer they suppressed the research. As a non smoker I am glad. I used to come home from work and the pub with with cloths stinking of smoke I didn't have any offers to pay for my dry cleaning from the "I'm entitled" brigade. I'm surprised any young people still smoke it is so socially unacceptable. Nearly all my friends bar one have given up even though they were ardent smokers most of their adult life. The NHS provides a lot of good support and will pay for the patches and gum etc. Sugar is the next big scandal again the big companies have known about the health risks since the 1950's and have done nothing about it. Post war ready meals arrived loaded with sugar and the problems with diabetes and obesity started.

I remember the trip by Supporters Club coach to Sunderland in the Cup Quarter Final in 76. The coach broke down twice (once going, once in London on the way back) and it took forever to reach home (didn't mind though because I won a blue felt fedora in the raffle and the sweepstake on the score). But I absolutely stankof smoke as everyone but me smoked on the coach. My scarf smelt for weeks but I wouldn't allow my Mum to wash it.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |
