I wouldn't say they are pointless for exercise at all. When you switch on the power you can get up hills you would otherwise not be able to. There is still a fair amount of effort required. I found mind great when I lived in the Surrey Hills, being an older git it meant I could go further and on routes I would not have normally attempted.

Buy a good lock when you buy the bike mate, even then take it in and leave in the hallway- away from the front door!
