To be fair I believe the Labour party pushed for the Beveridge report and that Churchill allowed this to go ahead as the price of coalition government.

I have just been reading up on this and I was surprised that the NHS had a lot more cross party support that I imagined. This alludes to your comments above.

"Conservative MP and Health Minister, Henry Willink later advanced this notion of a National Health Service in 1944 with his consultative White Paper "

But Labour got it done.

Indeed sir.

Couple of article about why we need reform of the Civil Service structure.

First up Public Health England

[Link]

Next up 85m face masks out of date and unsafe to wear.

[Link]

I am not letting Boris off the hook for his political blunders but somebody somewhere in the Civil Service was responsible for the disaster over PPE and PHE has shown itself to be pretty useless.

That doesn't mean I am criticising civil servants I am criticising the management structure which needs to be streamlined.

The 'new deal' has lasted a few days now everybody has realised it was only worth 5 billions, and is replaced by a new runner, the 30 billion revamp etc.

But it's tinkering, and gimmickry.

Does anybody really think £1,000 per employee would sway employers I think not.

As for a cheap meal between Monday and Wednesday in August, a typical pointless exercise.

There is no Keynes injection to create demand and jobs here, it is just tinkering at the edges with feel good headlines.

There is some worth in stating, for the benefit of correct history that four years before the NHS was created, the Conservative-led coalition published a 1944 white paper calling for a 'free' and 'comprehensive' healthcare service.

Indeed, the biggest block against the creation of the NHS were Doctors who voted against the service's introduction.

From the 1945 Conservative Party manifesto:
"The health services of the country will be made available to all citizens. Everyone will contribute to the cost, and no one will be denied the attention, the treatment or the appliances he requires because he cannot afford them. We propose to create a comprehensive health service covering the whole range of medical treatment from the general practitioner to the specialist, and from the hospital to convalescence and rehabilitation; and to introduce legislation for this purpose in the new Parliament."

Have to agree, the £1,000 and meal vouchers are a complete waste of money that could be better used elsewhere.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think you're absolutely right.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

The problem is that we are a diverse service based economy, that and the high street was declining before the virus.

Boot has just announced major redundancies, earlier this year I warned people to use their points and gift cards as it was rumoured they were in big trouble. The virus has just made things worse.

I'm not sure the rescue plan is the right thing but it was always going to be a grab bag of ideas to try and help such a diverse economy.

Time will tell if it works.
