It does seem to me that the old constitutional convention of individual ministerial responsibility
( and of course accountability) has been eroded over the years.

Once upon a time it didn't take a lot for a minister to feel obliged to resign if there was any question mark over their honesty, or apparent culpability for a poor decision on an important issue. It was almost a case of assumed guilty until proved innocent.

These days ministers seem to wriggle and squirm their way out of difficult situations and hang on until the PM decides they have become a liability and tells them their time is up.

This is not a good thing as the old deterrent of losing your post if you were caught being deceitful (lying)or just being downright incompetent, did, I think, encourage greater integrity.

Good point. There is some thought that Profumo lost his job not because of any wrong doing but because he lied about it.

And some like Priti Patel are sacked for dubious behaviour (I'm being polite) and a few short months later get handed one of the top jobs

Pretty much the entire cabinet are in place due to loyalty rather than ability.

And then there's Michael Gove who I assume got his job on the basis of "keeping one's enemies closer still"

It's widespread across the public sector.

Government Departments are run on the same basis ... I was always fascinated by the crony brownnoser/ boss relationships and how they would reap the benefits of accelerated promotion however inept they were. As soon as something went wrong or their idol moved on they would dissipate to the winds never to be seen again.

I wouldn’t mind some dubious behaviour with Priti Patel
