Andros Townsend could be a pick. Has a Palace player ever scored a better goal for England than the one he scored against Italy? My memory only takes me back as far as about 1990. So please educate me. Yes he was a Spurs player at the time.

On from my team that kicked this off; Martyn Taylor Managers/Coaches Venables/Hodgson Not bad from a "little team" from South London..!! COYP..!!

It's that attempted chip v France at Wembley that cruelly exposed his limitations - Kember was at least as good as Thomas imho, Gray was decent enough, but Johnny Byrne is a legend, more of an attacker than a midfielder (deep lying forward) so Kember and Byrne should be our all time great midfield pairing, not Gray and Thomas who were good players in a bad era imho Byrne was way before my time so don't feel fit to comment on someone I never watched. Caught the back end of Kember but was only a child at the time. Have to stand by my post, Thomas was awesome for us and I don't think one missed kick should detract on how important he was for us, particularly when considering it was our most successful period. That said, its all subjective.

I only really saw Kember late 70s when he was very good for us but he was more of a defensive spoiler and was more of a squad player when we were in div 1 (behind nicholas, francis , hilaire and murphy) - early 70s I think it's true to say he was more attack minded breaking out of midfield into the penalty area he was picked up by Chelsea when they had a great midfield with Hollins, Cooke, Hay and Hudson - that's when he had to become more of a supportive worker type player - but you had to be top class to hold down a place in that team, which he did. Went to Leicester when they had Frank Worthington and Bob Hatton (I think!) after Chelsea.

Johnny Byrne played for England while at Palace in the third division. Challenging for a place?? , he would be the first name on the list. Absolutely spot on.
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |
