Ive been in this position . Depends on how much you want the job and will it stop you from applying for other opportunities ?
Works both ways for me say yes but carry on looking for what you want .

ps I didn't hear another thing from them

I would apply for other opportunities but feel as if it was a kind way of rejecting me. I agreed to go on a reserve list, but think I probably wont hear from them again unless the other person turns down the job or another position comes up fast and they need to fill it quickly.

It depends on their recruitment process.*

I didn't get the job I wanted but they almost immediately offered me another job in the same area which they thought I was better suited to.

*Their recruitment policy allowed them the flexibility to not have to go through the whole recruitment cycle. for the different job however I didn't take it anyway.

If they say we like you why not go for this job I would sayd no you've already seen me offer me the job or don't bother. The problem is that being NHS they are probably required to go through the whole thing again.

Say yes. Keep your doors open but keep looking elsewhere.

Channel 4 has a good programme on job interviews a couple of years ago, it shows how difficult some of the calls are to make.

The more potential options you have, the stronger your position will be.

I saw 2 of the others interviewed today, I felt the person before me was known to the panel as I heard quite a bit of laughing and joking in the interview room. The person after me looked kinda nervous and fidgety, unfortunately It was 1 job and 56 applied and maybe no more than 8 were interviewed.
Something could happen in the next 24 hours or a position similar offered in the next 2 months but feel the person offered the position maybe had been given until tomorrow to accept it, if I hear nothing by the end of tomorrow my chances will probably be much more slim to zero.

It could be who you know, not what you know sadly.
Not right but nepotism exists in all walks.
Good luck anyhow.

NHS recruitment tends to be rule bound. They normally have a highly scripted panel interview. They also get quite a few rejections. I suspect it is as it appears. They want to hold your application anticipating - albeit maybe not expecting - an opening.

Best to move on and then if they come back with something consider it with fresh eyes. Finding jobs takes stamina I’m afraid. Keep at it, effort will bring reward.

Let me know if you want help
