Doing an extension at mine and got an email from Bromley council the other day stating that i needed to pay £9000 immediately as the sqm is above a certain size.
After finding out that it doesn’t apply to homeowners, but is meant for property developers, I got it squashed and never paid it. Anyone else been caught out by this, once paid its non refundable apparently. I think they send it out to everyone doing a large extension and hope to get a few that don’t ask questions and just pay it. I got mine 3 weeks after having planning approved, they said no works can begin until it is settled, we already had the footings poured.
Saddiq Khan started it to pay for cross rail apparently and the money is now being used for ‘community projects’.
Load of old b*llocks and will be another reason that developers will stop doing large work and slow down the building trade.

So late me get this straight somebody with a growing family can't afford to move to a bigger home so decides it's cheaper to build an extension and then Mayor Cannot wants to tax them.

Way to go Khan

Probably trying to make up for the housing market slowing down and missing out on the stamp duty.

And huge pay rises for TFL and his staff.
Another dose of austerity coming in to be blamed on the tories.
Historical and systemic.

Gonna be expensive for those families with 9+ kids that want two council houses knocked into one to accommodate them, on Housing benefit, then........

I wonder do religious buildings have to pay the levy? I'll stick my neck out and say no. Charitable status.
