I am surprised they claim to have planted it. Where we live, ash trees are weeds and get pulled out or cut down for open fire wood. When cut down, they quickly sprout again.

( " Ash that is green is fit for a queen. Ash that is dry is fit for you and I" )

If you could afford it maybe offer to purchase an olive tree in a big pot with an engraving epitaph including their fathers name etc.
Then they can put that safely in their garden and remember their father with that.
Just a thought.
