Unless they have had a full pre-season with their present club, but would still need time to bed into Roy's system (this is not a euphemism)

That won't take long:

Football’s a low scoring game. If you don’t concede you’re guaranteed a point.

Thank you Captain Obvious. Are you Micheal Owen in disguise?

There was a time when it made sense as a newly promoted side to wait until transfer deadline day and pick up the deadwood not wanted by other Clubs. I even enjoyed the scatter gun approach of Ollie's 1 window because no one was ready to go up that season.

However, I can't believe intelligent business people don't learn quickly from mistakes and pick up tips and clues from others with more experience doing it right.

Say we go out now and sign a striker, midfielder and left back (I don't believe we'll sign more than 1 btw), they could be some of the best players in the world, they won't be ready for Everton.

They'll need exactly the same amount of time as pre-season, around 6 weeks, to get anywhere near match ready.

It would make complete sense if we were battling United and City for the signing of Harry Maguire but we just know our targets will be people no one else is interested in, which is fine if we think they're a fit for Palace but pay the extra 500k and get them in before the Friendlies FFS.

Could be worse as we would be looking at a month into the season before anybody arrived. Hardly think this is surprising to any fan that we are waiting to the death to sign proper contenders for the 1st team. Clearly this is a long term policy in relation to transfers. COYP !!

Not sure policy is an accurate reflection of what's going on.

Unless the policy is specifically a last minute mad scramble by under qualified boys' club members to sign absolutely anyone on ridiculous wages after a summer of indecision, derisory offers and overlooking talented players?

Yes and would also like to point out that last season was our highest scoring one since being back in the premier league.

That's because we had bundles of pens with a great pen score.
Take half of them away and we'd be playing the clowns this year.
That wont happen next year even with var.

Nothing wrong with losing pre-season BUT WE NEED A STRIKER!!!!!!!!

have we won one yet?

Didn't Bruce Rioch get sacked after he lost a load of pre-season games? At least he'd bought Patrick Viera.

It frustrates me that year after year, seemingly attainable players seem to go elsewhere and we don't get a look in. Clubs like Bournemouth act decisively and 'overpay' and then make a profit on Tyrone Mings because their targets are young and have resale value. Clubs like Watford actually have a scouting network and have heard of players they're not introduced to by agents.

Meanwhile we wait for June after a nice break, sit round a table and discuss what position we need, identify a few names, offer 20% below the market value to 'test the water', a week later offer 15% below the market value, a week later offer 10% below the market value... Then West Ham come in.

I was delighted with all our marquee signings of the past few years, especially Benteke - so I accept I know f*** all. But sometimes seemingly obvious players come and go and for a fraction of the price and I do wonder if we ever took a look at them...

You still have to get the ball in the opponent’s penalty area to get one.
Going back to the original point Pardew nearly took us down as a result failing to respect clean sheets and points yet there’s an expectation that with a squad lacking in midfield attacking options and a decent centre forward we should be more adventurous.

Would not say that is "unfortunate". She is the Queen of Palace having done more for the club (with her pictures and great book "Hy on Palace" than anyone else I know of.
