I'm not in favour of selling our best players all.
In the case of AWB, I think that 45 million plus add ons was far too cheap a price for the best tackler in Europe with many years of playing time ahead.

To us, he was worth far more.

At the time of the transfer, £45+5 felt to me like a good deal. He's got incredible potential but he'd still only played 42 games for us and was a record breaking fee.

Roll on a couple of weeks and seeing the likes of Maguire going for £80m and Dunk for £45m, coupled with Arsenal offering £40m for Zaha. You have to feel that the deal looks poor and question why other clubs feel they can offer derogatory fees to us and not others. If Levy was in charge, AWB probably would have gone for much more....but then he wouldn't have spent any of it either.

My fear is neither will we.

I think the 6-2 makes it look worse. No Palace side should be losing by that margin to that opposition.

It makes you realise how rare someone like Wilf or AWB is and why we should not sell our future for a poultry 50 million.

I think it shows us that our reserve and youth players are not ready for EPL. we need to take a serious look at the older ones and consider if they do have a future. I am not picking on Innis but he takes up a squad place and I can not see him ever being an EPL player, release him and let him find the correct level

Yeah, I know what you thought.

You were wrong.

The club couldn't wait to take the money.

It could still be a good deal depending on who we get in. Buy Max Aaron's for 20m then that's is 30m in the pocket or on other players.

However, this should have been lined up before AWB went. Now clubs know we have 45m cash, and will try to jack up the prices.

80m for Maguire is too much, given last season he was nowhere near as good as the season before. Whilst 45m for Dunk is utterly laughable.

Dunk may have attracted a premium over AWB because he is a centre back, centre backs are part of the spine of any team.

Well the Dunk valuation is theoretical because nobody knows how legit that rumour is. Also centre backs have a higher premium than full backs throughout history so that is a factor too.

A better comparison would be that Atletico are paying £20m for Trippier who (in Southgates view at least) is ahead of AWB. So, by that logic we did great business.

I know KT only had a year left and a bad year last year so not truly comparable. But my point is neither is Dunk/Maguire. I remain confident that £50m for a full back is great business.
