We had a recent disagreement between student and teacher recently on the number of genders and whether a student could vocally disagree with 'state approved' teaching in class. For me, more interesting than the question of how many genders exist was the teacher's insistence that he not publicly challenge the teaching. Matt Christiansen airs some of the video (taken without teacher consent) and discusses the issues around it here.

I actually think that both teacher and student are victims here. They need to outed. Everyone needs to defy this sort of nonsense. There are only two genders.

Tricky because you know the system will completely support him. As for the two genders question. Personally I view the whole gender question as a social constructionist invention. In terms of humanity nature creates two sexes. Natural variation means that for a tiny percent of us a combination of sex will be created. I do not personally believe that this warrants the suggestion that more than two sexes exist in human biology only that 'intersex' as natural variation exists, as it exists, within all biology. Gender is a word for what's going on in people's heads not what is between their legs. Like the student says, it's an opinion. To that extent I have no issue with it......Where the huge injustice occurs is when it becomes an sociological and political dogma to teach young minds that 'opinion' is real.....and that gender exists as something real.

You're either man or woman or either of the former with a mental illness.

I don't want to see Arthur and Martha in the same wrestling ring.

Agree with all of that. The problem largely lies with definitions. Is gender now different from sex? And how do we define the various other conditions that range from genetic disorders and simple tribalism to mental illness? This must be undertaken without political pressure.

I think in a time before the universities weren't majority far left I would have agreed that these questions should be purely academic.....not that the far left don't deserve a place in university...they do....but they dominate them. Anyway, the movement away from the 'reals' into the 'feels' has been almost universal. Those who object have largely learnt to keep their mouths shut. Edited by Stirlingsays (23 Jun 2019 7.54pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (23 Jun 2019 7.54pm) The 'feels' is not unlike a new religion, which for some, seems to fill the void left by their rejection of theocratic guidance.
