Villa were promoted from the 3rd division at the end of 1971/72 and haven't been back to the third tier since.

they went up with Bournemouth, basically we spent the first half of our existence in the bottom half and the last 55 years or so we have consolidated as top half, the period of stagnation between 1998 and 2013 14 out of 15 seasons in the championship was a sort of stabilising job because we were flying up down the leagues from 1960 to 1981 - the fact that we didn't fall through the trap door shows our durability and our default level, 3rd tier to us is utterly unacceptable and we are the only south London club who can state this seriously.

Intertoto Cup 2006! Of course, about on a par with Zenith Data Systems Cup.

Blimey was it that long ago,I thought they had been in the third tier in the early eighties when Brian Little was manager.

In the early 80's they were winning the league and the European cup! Nowhere near the third tier.
