If i am not mistaken Balotelli & Eto`o tried to walk away from the pitch due to consistent racial abuse from opponent fans. Yes, it became headline but life went on after. Although i would not stress any player who give this decision, this should not be official methodology as it overwrites main rule of the game which confirms that `referee` is the ruler on the pitch. Any action should be taken and reported by him. I don`t think stopping or abandoning the game would be an issue. There are various of practice for this. If you throw items to pitch, club is fined but game continues but if it consistently happens, referee has all rights to walk off and / or abandon. It is not feasible to stop the game whenever someone here monkey sounds for sure but if it starts ruling the atmosphere, there is no issue to do so. It is not different than consistently throwing items to the pitch.

People blurt this b0llocks out because they want to have an impact on the individual. Instead, take out the frustration on the goal mouth, and as you say let the ref deal with it. It's a very connected age. People can point out d!ckheads reeling off racial slurs, or better still film them when they're doing it, so it's undeniable. It's very much a minority pursuit, and fans, players and officials can work together to kick it out. It's not a god given right to attend a football game and crap all over eveyone elses enjoyment of it. They can enjoy their ban in front of Sky Sports at home, while the rest of us enjoy the match in person.

Is the perception that this is a recent phenomenon or has it always been there but not reported?
