Genuine question. Why are so many people so concerned about the wellbeing of smokers? Why not warn gamblers or fast food customers or mountaineers? It’s not like we don’t know the potential danger so why keep on about it? Yes the NHS would apparently benefit but not as much as if alcohol was banned so why not issue health warnings to people who enjoy a drink. Who, by the way, are not all addicts.

Fair point. As Ticked said the thread was there so I contributed, especially to inaccuracies. Society does care about gambling and so on, even recently there were more restrictions put in place with fixed odds betting terminals and the like. It's always a difficult balance as it is with smoking and fast food.

Smoking can physically and directly harm the health of others in a way that none of the above can. They can all impact mental health though so I understand you raising these other interests and habits. Would I rather a loved one smoke than weigh 500 pounds or engage in wing suit flying? If forced to make that theoretical choice, then yes!

I agree on the drink front though, with how it's viewed. Getting pissed out of your head and causing trouble or problems for others is given much more of a free pass in society than smoking or drugs. Banning drink, or smoking or anything creates as many problems as it solves though. More usually. Society should be as free as possible.

So just how many people have been:

mugged
beaten up
raped
robbed
driven into
had their vehicle smashed up
abused

by someone under the influence of nicotine?

As in unintentionally. If a smoker smokes around others, it's their habit, but they may harm the health of loved ones without any recognition that they are doing so.

I did highlight in the post that out of legal drugs, drink is one that gets the free pass in society, and that I disagree with it being that way and for the problems it causes in society to somehow be uncoupled from alcohol.

Of course most people who drink don't rape anyone or rob anyone though, which was factored in when I added that banning drinking, smoking or anything really tends to create more harm than good in society. We saw that in the States with prohibition.
