The Monkees and Saturday teatimes 1967 are inextricably linked for me. Peter Tork, for no obvious reason, was my third favourite Monkee behind Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith. They actaully produced some songs that I still find listenable - Last Train to Clarkesville, I'm a Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday. They did rather commit commercial suicide with the off-beat Alternate Title.

There is a pressure on groups to write their own material because that is how you make the most money from music.
