My first game was 17th April 1971 a 3-5 home defeat to Manchester United. United had the likes of Stepney, Sadler, Best, Charlton and Law in their side. If I remember correctly I believe Alan Birchanel put us 1-0 up. I noticed yesterday that Birch still works for Leicester City in some capacity. I think that was Ross Jenkin's first league game. Went on to have great career with Watford alongside Luther Blisset

My first ever Crystal Palace football match, I was just 11 and went with lad who was 12 to celebrate my birthday on 23rd!!!!x!! This is my 50th season.... who else was at that match??
Crystal Palace 3-2 Fulham League Division Two – Att: 36,126 Manager: Bert Head The Glaziers were promoted to the top flight for the very first time in a dramatic match at Selhurst Park. A point would be enough to secure Palace promotion over local rivals Charlton, but the visitors raced into a 0-2 lead through goals from Brian Dear and Frank Large. Palace came storming back, and goals from Steve Kember and Mark Lazarus levelled proceedings before Cliff Jackson sealed the win and promotion. Just like in 1961 (above), ultimately the result didn’t matter as Charlton lost 1-0 at home to Preston. Rather fittingly, this turned out to be Johnny Byrne’s last ever game in English football. The Palace legend lined up for Fulham on the day and would move to Durban City in the summer – no doubt delighted that his boyhood team had found their way to the top flight. Before the match, the Palace Dolly Girls lined up in front of the Main Stand to receive orchids from the players. That was also my first season supporting Palace. Started in July 68 with a friendly home to Chelsea which was a 1.1 draw followed by Huddersfield at home early August which we won 2.1 As for the Fulham match I remember it well and it’s the only time I ever ran onto the pitch when Cliff Jackson scored. I wasn’t the only fan as hundreds ran on to celebrate - think it was the winner? I

Regarding Willo's earlier mention of Alan Birchenall, I'm certain he was on the pitch to read out the tribute to Gordon Banks on Saturday before our game. Great player for us, happy days.

This got me thinking...hard. It's a hell of a long time ago since watching my first game in what was the old League Division 4. April 1960 when we beat Exeter by a single goal. I was hooked. It was just after my 7th birthday. Many happy memories. We usually stood on the hill at the Whitehorse road end. Memories are of colourful rosettes, rattles, Bovril at half time, plus peanuts at 6 old pence a bag. Happy days indeed. Such a long time ago, but still enjoying/suffering in equal measure 59 years later...... Tony Collins' brother John used to sell the peanuts. I think TC played on the left wing.
As a kid in the mid-1950s, seeing the old floodlights from our kitchen window in Whitworth Road, the writing was on the wall. |

Trutth be told I can’t remember my first game but the first match I have memories of was in ‘67 standing amongst a massive crowd on the Holmesdale when we beat Wolves 4-1 and Danny Light was the man........ Mind you of that time Jackson, Sewell, Blyth, Kember and particularly Bobby Woodruff were even more memorable! That game screwed Wolves chances of the title and handed it to Coventry.
