Sunderland til I Die (NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY)

Unlike most football shows that can be found on Netflix, Sunderland til I Die offers a real look into the World behind the football curtain.

I was reluctant to watch this as (from a Palace fan's perspective)...I don't particularly like Sunderland and I believed that this was going to be a Sunderland fan fest. And whilst it is impossible to get a great football documentary without featuring the embellishments of the fans, after the first 10 minutes this was a surprisingly good documentary

Without spoiling it a great deal, the documentary mainly follows the club's Chief Exec with the behind the scenes running of the club during the 2017-18 season, which culminated in Sunderland's relegation into League One.

The documentary follows the players, and more extensively, it follows our very own Jonny Williams during a loan spell that saw him dogged with injuries, and showing us all the human side of being a professional footballer. Chris Coleman (love him or hate him) features a lot in the latter episodes.

If you've yet to watch it, it may be something for you to consider doing over Xmas as it draws parallels to Palace in years past where we have struggled (constantly) with relegation battles, and getting a good team together with little money to spend.

A surprisingly great documentary all round for the football fan. Even for the schadenfreudes who are not partial to Sunderland.

This series is far more engrossing than Man Citys one. Also a big shout out to Jonny Williams for speaking on camera about some of his mental struggles with injuries etc. Very interesting and enlightening.

Was about to start a thread on this. Just finished the last episode.

A great watch and really interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes. Joniesta features heavily and cones across very well. Appears to be a real game changer for them. The way that club has been run is shambles and ultimately you end up with sympathy for the fans and a soft spot for the club.

Coleman seems a decent hard working bloke and did the best he could with what he had. The Jack Rodwell situation represents everything that is wrong with football. Lewis Grabben is clearly an arrogant tosser who rates himself too highly, I really hope he never makes it in the Premiership.

Certainly worth a watch

seen 2 episodes. Pretty good overall. Sunderland are a proper club.....money problems, close connection to their geographical base with few international plastic fans, august history, strong local rivalries, passionate fans in a loud stadium who understand the game , zero aspirations for the champions league and all that glamour b...llox
.......it all reminds of another club i can think of that wear red 50% of the time.

Just finished watching it.

My initial thoughts were around how badly the club had been run...remote American investment, poor decisions in the transfer market, overpaid players not delivering on the pitch and a CEO not able to address the situation.

There are some obvious parallels there with Palace, and the effects of relegation from the Premier League were in this case catastrophic.

I thought Chris Coleman came across as a nice guy and he said all the right things but didn't rate him for the football side of things.

Very interesting contribution from Johnny Williams. I'd dearly love his career to really take off whoever it is with.

Sunderland are a big club whose fans deserve better. Hopefully the new ownership will turn things around.

watching a programme like this reminds me just how toxic the top dozen clubs in europe are.

They are less to do with community and more to do with the selling of merchandise. Nike, Adidas, Chelsea. All just corporate scum.

we have more in common with Sunderland/boro/Leeds/Newcastle than we have with

manCiteh/ManUre/Chelscum/Real Madrid/PSG

Glad to see that someone posted this Thread, I was about to do so as well. This is a tremendously revealing look inside the business of football like none I've ever seen before. Management (great choices lousy choices...no more money to spend), loyal (angry) fans, players who give their all, players not worth a second look....it looks frighteningly familiar. Couldn't turn it off!

Don't get me wrong, I loved the documentary, but for me, rightly or wrongly, it provided little insight into what actually went wrong with Sunderland football club, which a big part of me was hoping to get by watching the documentary.

Clearly there was so much more than went on during that season, which the documentary does not show.
