Whilst in Britain the unions and management were at each others throats the Germans and the Japanese got on with inventing new ways of doing things and new working practices. The chickens only came home to roost for us in the seventies. I know many people blame Thatcher for the 1980s but it was the failure of previous Tory and Labour governments that dates back as far as the 1960's Wilson government. Wilson understood that the world was changing when he gave his "white heat new technology" speech the problem was he then failed to do anything about it. So plenty of blame to go all around and silly to blame anyone one individual or party. That's why we were called the sick man of Europe. Thatcher would never have happened if the previous governments had done their job properly.

The problem with a lot of management today is that many of them have been fast-tracked there just because they've got a university degree. There are good experienced older people being overlooked just because a spotty oik has passed a couple of exams. The police force is one of the major guilty parties of this, which may explain why crime is out of control. Even worse, certain organisations feel that they have to hit quotas, meaning that better qualified people miss out. Edited by martin2412 (11 Oct 2018 5.14pm)

I think that most would say that if crime is out of control it has more to do with the reduction in the numbers of police rather than the fast tracking of graduates

I was part of a group of experienced junior management who went to the university of life. We were overlooked because we didn't have degrees yet most of us had bags of experience and had started at the bottom. They shipped in Oxbridge graduates and ex army officers to manage us. These people were intelligent but lacked any banking knowledge or experience. What does an army major know about FX. securities or Trade Finance. These people were flagged up for fast track promotion to the top something myself and the others would have loved. To a man (and I mean men) they all failed and eventually the bank started to promote the people who had been working at the pit head. Nothing wrong with graduates but intelligence and experience are not the same thing.
