Adam Reach goal not a volley

Fantastic goal but almost all the news outlets are describing it as a volley. Has the description changed over the years because it certainly is not a volley.

To me it’s a volley. A volley is when a player strikes the ball when it’s off the deck. A half-volley is when a player strikes the ball as it comes down on to the deck (like a drop-goal in rugby). IMHO. I’ve always considered a half-volley to me more skilful.

To my miniscule mind a volley is when the ball is struck before it has hit the ground and a half-volley is when the ball is struck at the exact moment that it makes contact with the ground or perhaps a split-second after it has hit the ground. Example of a volley is when a defender clears the ball and it is struck before it touches the ground or even a strike from a corner when the ball hasn't made any contact with the ground.With a half-volley the ball cleared by a defender would be hit just as it touches the ground or a miniscule time after and this applies to the corner as described above. I have not seen the goal by Adam Reach last night.

How about, a volley is when the ball is off the ground descending, a half volley is when the ball is off the ground rising (having just bounced)? Does that work?

Willo’s and Galv’s (and others’) definition of volley certainly meets with the definition in tennis, for example.
